Research findings about the negative impacts of fine particulate matter started becoming clear in the 1990s. Since particulate matter is emitted from many sources throughout Prince George, air quality management broadened from an industrial-only to a community-wide focus. The initial Air Quality Management Plan (Phase I) was written in 1998 and evolved into a three-phase plan that extended to 2016. PGAIR currently operates under a Five-Year Strategic Plan that provides general guidance and direction for PGAIR until 2026.
